Ladakh is a land, which is stark yet striking. Once you enter Ladakh it seems you have entered an isolated place. The mountains, their solitude is awe - inspiring and endearing at once. The vastness and sternness of the landscape of this region is really amazing. It is located at an altitude of 2,500 to 4,500m. The best time to visit Ladakh is between June to end of September. The trans Himalayan region consists of Ladakh, Leh, Lahaul & Spiti and Zanskar. Places to Visit in Ladakh
Among the monuments there are Leh Palace, which was built by King Singe Namgyal in the 17th century. There is Shey Palace, which is about 15 km from Leh, this is the most ancient capital of the kings of Ladakh. Stok Palace, which is about 20 km away, across the river Leh. It is the present residence of the Royal family. And among the places of worship there is Buddhist Gompas or monasteries, which has Buddhist images and artifacts. The Jamia mosque, which is located in the center of Leh bazaar is a historical mosque built during 17th century. There is the famous Thiksay monastery, which resonates with an ambience of peacefulness and serenity. The spirituality and compassion deeply associated with Buddhism has seeped into the lifestyle of the people of this land. Among the other monasteries are Stakna, Hemis, Chemrey, Takthok and Matho. If you are interested in excursions then there are lots of options for you like Nubra valley, which is situated north of Leh. There is Pangong Lake, which straddles the Indo China border. Tso Moriri Lake is also a place to visit it is the only breeding ground of the rare bar-headed geese and is home to rare species of birds.

Shopping in Ladakh
You have lots of shopping options in Ladakh. You can shop for traditional items like a goncha (Ladakhi gown), silver jewelry, traditional statues and masks, hand-knitted carpets and woolens. You must also go for the pure apricot oil, which is used as pain reliever. There is a handicraft center in Leh, which you can try out.
