Mountaineering in the Himalayas is quite a difficult task. It is not for common people you have to be trained before you go for climbing. Apart from being trained it is also an expensive option. The actual time spent on the climbing is relatively a small proportion of the total time taken by the mountaineers to get to the mountain. In the expedition the Sherpas accompany you and you have to carry various items like tents, cooking utensils sleeping bags, etc. The expense can be curtailed if you carry hired equipments from various clubs and organizers. You have to take various precautions before you go for mountaineering. It involves a lot of risk so you need to be totally prepared and accompanied by experienced climbers.

Jammu and Kashmir

Ladakh: here the Zanskar and Suru valley offers some great climbing experience. Here the Nun Kun Massif is one of the most climbed areas of the region and it is booked through out the year. The way to the twin peaks is from the Kargil-Padum Road, which is about 70 km south of Kargil. Pir Panjal mountaineering range is another such option, which is situated south of the Himalayas.

Even mountaineering in Manali, Himachal Pradesh is also a great option. Places like Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas, Uttaranchal can also be tried. This region contains some of the most challenging peaks like Chaukhamba, Nilkanth, Bandarpoonch, Trisul, Dunagiri, Kamet, Nanda Devi, etc.

In Sikkim Himalayas mountaineering is just great fun. Its beauty is just incomparable. In the southwestern part of Sikkim, in the main Himalayan range, is the Kanchenjunga, which rises to an altitude of 8,585 m or 28,169 ft above sea level. Among the other famous peaks in Sikkim there are Kirat Chulior Tent Peak, Kabru, and Sinolchu.
